2020 Abarth 124 GT Review: Specs, Performance, Features
The 2020 Abarth 124 GT test drive, a spider with a removable hardtop in carbon fiber, not only highlights the car’s performance, but also the consumption and technical data of the Scorpio car.
Buy two and pay one. The supermarket slogan fits perfectly for the Abarth 124 GT, the special series of the Scorpio brand, which combines two cars in one. The brilliant idea was to integrate the Abarth 124 Spider, already an excellent roadster, with the hard top in carbon fiber which makes it practically become a 4-season car. Yes, because after having used it uncovered or with the canvas teapot during the summer, when the first cold arrives, all you have to do is apply the hard top, above the lowered hood, and magically it becomes a beautiful coupe. Not even ten minutes of work and two keys are enough to have the second machine available, the winter machine that you can use every day without the risk of frost or various infiltrations. A special carbon fiber capsule that makes you feel safe and allows you to use it even in atmospheric conditions, certainly not the best.
We experimented with it during that bad period of time with lots of rain and wind in the last few weeks and Abarth 124 GT did not wrinkle. Two Allen screws at the rear, two interior hooks at the side to loosen and the front hook under the roof (the same as the canvas hood) to be unlocked and you’re done. Ah, I forgot, there is also to detach the jack that electrically connects the heated glass rear window to the system of the car, and insert the two plugs that cover the housing of the rear support. In short, a minor operation that allows in a few minutes to change the soul of the car, from spider to coupe, and to fully enjoy the countless benefits.
The new special series premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in the exclusive Gray Alpi Orientali livery, the color of our mountains. The 2020 Abarth 124 GT surprised everyone with the solution that combines the lightness and simplicity of the soft top , easy to operate manually even when seated, the technical top, light and safe, the only one on the market totally in carbon fiber, which it allows you to go in a few minutes from the emotions of the en plein air guide to the gritty Gran Turismo look that is part of the DNA of the Scorpio brand. The hard top weighs only 16 kg and contributes to the overall compactness and torsion rigidity of the car, ensuring thermal and acoustic insulation and wide rear visibility, thanks to the quick defrost system in less than 3 ‘.
In addition to the characteristics that have made the 124 Spider a success, the car features numerous exclusive contents such as the 17 “OZ Racing alloy wheels, which weigh about 3 kg less than the standard and guarantee improved maneuverability and new and more sports. In addition, the mirror caps feature the exclusive gunmetal color, combined with the front spoiler. On request, it is possible to equip the car with a black opaque treatment. This finish is a clear reference to the historic Abarth 124 Rally that adopted this solution to reduce the reflections of the sun on the pilot. Our test car also had the carbon fiber rear spoiler, as well as the mirror caps (optionally they can also be red) and the Brembo braking system with red calipers. Really at the top.
Abarth 124 GT Performance
In short, two souls who, despite their differences, share the brand’s core values: performance, craftsmanship and technical excellence. Abarth 124 is thus a new benchmark among sports roadsters, with the strength of engineering solutions: masses concentrated inside the wheelbase, engine installed behind the front axle, refined mechanics and special materials, for a weight/power ratio from record. Furthermore, the perfect distribution of the weights in running order (50/50) guarantees excellent feedback and agility. Suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers (yellow) utilizes a high-beam quadrilateral pattern at the front and a multilink 5-arm architecture at the rear, with a setup calibrated specifically to increase cornering and braking stability. Finally, the Abarth 124 GT is equipped with a powerful and reliable1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with MultiAir technology, which delivers 170 hp (around 124 horsepower per liter) and 250 Nm of torque, for a top speed of 232 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.8 “.
It is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or with the Esseesse Sports Sequential automatic transmission. We have tried the first one, which has always guaranteed precise and rapid grafts thanks to the direct lever with short stroke. Moreover, since the sound of the engine is a key element in every Abarth car, we fully appreciate the Record Monza exhaust with dual mode system, which allows you to vary the exhaust gas path as the engine speed changes and generate an intense and deep sound. The apex of the sonority manifests itself at the ignition of the engine, with a prolonged and increasing rumble, which also sets in motion the adrenaline.
We traveled 1,752 km on all types of roads, even uphill, finding unparalleled handling, excellent road holding despite rear-wheel drive and horses and torque available, as well as a sound above average, but that does not bother, not even on the highway during long journeys. The satisfaction of being behind the wheel in such a high-performance car increases when you press the Sport button behind the gearbox: the acceleration is really overbearing and you would never want to find a stop or a red light. The instrumentation on board is complete, even if the navigator is not the best. A note I would also do the saddlery, too sporty for a road car, so not very comfortable. For the rest, guaranteed fun, in all circumstances. To be tried absolutely.
