2020 Mazda CX-3 Redesign; Skyactive Engine Performance
2020 Mazda CX-3 is an arrow aimed at the B-SUV market, the compact Crossovers that have assaulted our roads: it has style, rich interiors, and a concrete engine. Here is our road test
Beautiful before anything else, the Mazda CX-3 points directly to the throne of the B-SUVs, those compact crossovers that are so fashionable in the city for the driving position of absolute dominance and a comfort on board well blended with the necessary agility in parking lots and maneuvers.
The Japanese brand gets its hands on one of the brand’s most popular vehicles, the Mazda CX-3 Crossover. The New SUVs restyling, available in Europe from the summer, is leveled with the largest and most comprehensive CX-5 in design and functionality.
The new York show revealed to the public the new Mazda CX-3 2020. The restyling of a model on the market, for now, three years has mainly interested the details, starting from the frontal grille and continuing with a revisitation of the interior. The Kodo design, Pivotal point of Mazda’s stylistic strategy, is updated on the younger sister who adopts most of the solutions seen on the Mazda CX-5. Relevant updates also touch the Skyactiv Motor range (Euro 6d-Temp) and the driving dynamics with the G-vectoring Control.
2020 Mazda CX-3 Redesign and Changes
The restyling of the new CX-3 introduces small innovations on the stylistic front (the grille line changes slightly, as does the design inside the headlights) and new engine variants. We tested the car in its Exceed version (top of the range with splendid white eco-leather upholstery) equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, capable of 121 Hp and 206Nm of maximum torque. Mazda, at downsizing, doesn’t believe at all. Or at least not enough to commit to it.
However, it developed a technology among the most innovative in the car, patented Market under the symbol Skyactiv with which manages to reduce consumption without sacrificing performance at least interesting (G for gasoline, D for diesel).
Mazda, as reiterated several times by the brand’s leaders, is entering with determination on the playing field of the German brand Noble. This means, among other things, to frequently update their models even with details that are difficult to recognize at first glance. Like the CX-5 though, the car sports a cleaner and more aggressive line on the front and slightly revised optical groups at the rear.
Finally come to the adaptive Matrix LED headlights, which automatically manage the beam of light depending on who arrives in the opposite lane. Taking a look at the interiors we find a new central tunnel, more mature and organized, comprising of the rotor to operate the infotainment and electric parking brake auto hold.
On the most refined productions, often in combination with the automatic transmission, we find the adaptive cruise Control as a corollary of the ads security systems baptized by Mazda I-ACTIVESENSE, a package that includes warnings of the involuntary overcoming of Lane, emergency braking, surveillance of dead corners and more.
For the rest you can not say that overall lines and proportions have been upset, on the other hand, CX-3 has always had a rather futuristic silhouette.
Overview & Dimensions
The Exceed variant had a lot to show. The white leather interior, classy assemblies, and a decidedly premium ambiance elevate the driving experience. The person sitting behind is comfortable and has a nice armrest with a lunch box; those in front can take advantage of the electronic adjustment of the seats and an excellent infotainment system.
On this front, the Japanese brand has taken a new and intelligent road since the release of the Mazda3: the controls are given with special commands on the central tunnel, because the display is not a touchscreen so as not to distract the driver, thus solving the contradiction for which it is fined those who use the smartphone but nothing for those who fiddle with the display.
The finishes that characterize the climate vents are beautiful, while the enigmatic presence of a CD player on a machine launched at full speed in the next-gen is surprising. Comfortable climate controls; good leather and Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard. In all honesty, the car does not need such an arrangement to be appreciated, the Executive is already quite complete. We are less willing to give up on the splendid Soul Red Crystal coloring, but only until we have the opportunity to see live other variations just as spectacular as Eternal Blue.
The size of the car (which stands at 4.275 meters in length and 1.729 in width and 1.535 in height) make it an ideal companion for city life. Simple to park and quick to maneuver, it has the only defect of not offering a great view to the rear of the driver.
2020 Mazda CX-3 With Skyactive Engine
The Skyactiv works by increasing the compression ratio of the gasoline engine up to numbers close to the Diesel (given a ratio of 10: 1 for the first, it can exceed 20: 1 for the second) in order to maximize the yield of the engine in terms of consumption without going to bust the thermal output of the engine. Normally, in fact, such a substantial increase in the compression ratio would lead to premature detonation of the incoming gases, thus ruining the piston heads and mortifying the delivery. In the jargon, we speak of “knocking”, a phenomenon that on cars equipped with a little sophisticated electronics could also lead to the failure of the engine.
To remedy this problem Mazda engineers have modified the length of the manifolds, now more distant from the terminal, so as to give an easier outlet to the gases coming out of the four cylinders of the engine. However, longer collectors would have cooled the outgoing gases, thus forming unburned particles and, once again, hampered the correct operation of the propeller.
For this reason, the piston crown was partly excavated, so as to give the mixture of air and petrol a more homogeneous blast. In the same way, Skyactiv engines are equipped with variable valve timing and are thus able to offer a compression ratio of 14: 1, which according to Mazda translates into a 30% reduction in consumption compared to an engine without these solutions.
The 2020 Mazda CX-3 is equipped with the new generation of Skyactiv engines, one of the most efficient powertrains in the automotive scene. High performance and reduced emissions, in fact, characterize this family of compact and thrifty thrusters. The Skyactiv-D revolves around a lower combustion temperature than traditional Diesel engines, thus allowing the most stringent regulations to be met. As for gasoline instead, Mazda proposes the Skyactiv-G 2.0 liters with 148 Horsepower and the already mentioned G-vectoring Control, a system designed to improve the sporty driving-which controls the traction in the curve input phase to contain any Scomponimenti of the trim.
Getting behind the wheel of a Mazda, among the various press park cars, is a guarantee. Because you know you can expect good comfort and, above all, a good guide. Perhaps not exaggerated, but always able to satisfy even those with somewhat selective tastes in the guided tour. So it was also with the CX-3 powered by the 2.0-liter petrol with 121CV you see in the test. The cars of Hiroshima are not racing but, in practice, they do not struggle to maintain all those precautions that make driving pleasant: the steering is well calibrated, the gear lever is reduced and the attitude is not so soft in relation to the category of belonging.
The accelerator response, the perceived grip and the power delivered by the engine, kept under control by a braking system that is always in place, are more common. The ergonomics of the car immediately convinces and continues even through several hours of driving on the highway. In these cases, the car can produce some noise, even if it is not annoying. If you love car music then, the excellent stereo system will certainly help you.
The ideal environment for this car is a medium-sized city because the agility in the traffic is not lacking and in the mixed one is appreciated. The 350 liters of luggage perform their job without infamy and without praise, allowing also a good load during the inevitable weekend at the beach. The gasoline engine is not to be defined taurine, but it is removed from the impact-as overtaking on the highway and restarts in the traffic – without batting an eye. The aforementioned Skyactivallows to offer important performances also in terms of consumption, which is around 17 km / l in daily use. A battle against the downsizing that Mazda has won without too much hassle.
Mazda CX-3 imposes itself on the market as a concrete and refined proposal. It has a price that starts at the bottom, just over $22,000, and offers a lot of quality. The lack of a substantial push is justified if we consider competitors, while the white leather interiors add a premium touch to a car that caters to the generalist market.
