2020 Jeep Renegade AWD Off-Road Review

2020 Jeep Renegade AWD Off-Road Review

We were at the FCA Balocco Experimental center to try out the new Jeep Renegade 2020. The Crossover is presented with new engines, more advanced, and a restyling that largely incorporates the styles imposed by Wrangler. Available since July 2018, the new renegade Jeep has an attack price of €22,000. Here is our proof

We tried the new Jeep Renegade 2020, strong of a targeted and effective restyling and a range of revised engines to meet the new anti-pollution regulations. First on the road, with the Limited, and then in a twisty offroad path aboard the most specialized Trailhawk.

2020 Jeep Renegade Design & Styling

The new Jeep Renegade 2020 presents itself to Balocco as a star after success. She is now more beautiful, confident of her own means and ready to charm. The first series has traced a groove, the second one collects the inheritance. The restyling does not upset the lines if anything the door to a higher level.

The full LED headlights are presented with an authoritarian and sophisticated cut, giving the entire front a more square and unequivocally Jeep form. The affinity with Wrangler is more and more evident thanks to the guessed geometries, while for the Limited we find new 19-inch alloy wheels and dedicated moldings.

In the same way the rear sports new optical groups with a more elaborate design. Overall the exterior is more mature, premium and impact. Novelty also to the interiors, where they were revised several details starting with the mud drawn on the tachometer in the red zone, finally (!) replaced by a more appropriate graphics. Space has been rethought to provide greater practicality on the central tunnel, while we find a second USB socket for the passengers sitting behind.

Finally, the quality of the assemblages improved, now more suited to the segment of belonging and, above all, to the level of the fierce competitors coming from the Orient. The whole thing costs 2019 from the logic of a market that proposes facelift practically impossible to distinguish. So much so that, alongside the new version, the Jeep renegade last year resembles a fake copyright. Always you, of course, however less refined, proportionate and impactful.

A curiosity: On the rear direction indicators and on the frame of the audio system we find a stylized logo of the iconic grid Wrangler, which returns in full in a small detail on the windshield.

2020 Jeep Renegade Engine & Equipment

The show must continue. Even if the emission laws are always stricter and even with the electrification is at the gates. FCA expects, according to the industrial plan recently presented by Marchionne to investors, a variant Hybrid Plug-in for all models for sale in 2022, models that (while remaining under the SUV/Crossover) will occupy each segment of the market.

To prepare for the impact, Jeep has developed a new range of engines designed to accommodate the hybrid system already today, strong with a great structural compactness and optimized performance through avant-garde technical solutions.

Specifically, on Jeep Renegade debuts the range of petrol engines MultiAir III, available both with a 3-cylinder with 120 hp and 190 Nm of torque and with the most performance 4-cylinder 1.3 liters, specifically calibrated in two variants from 150 hp or 180 hp, both with 270 nm of maximum torque. The differences, in this case, are entrusted to the transmission.

On the 150 Hp, it is possible to insert between the preferences a 6-speed double dry clutch gearbox while those who want the all-wheel-drive can opt for the automatic 9-speed torque converter to match the 180 hp. This is about the gasoline that, among other things, was equipped with a specific particle filter called GPF. Engines that, of course, we will see also in other cars of the group.

The offer, however, remains concrete even with the Diesel MultiJet II, which on Renegade offers two different capacities, the classic 1.6 and 2.0 liters four-cylinder, where the first offers 120 Hp and the second with 140 Hp or 170 hp. Also, in this case, the “smaller” thruster can be combined with the double clutch while the larger is also fitted with a 9-speed automatic drive.

The productions start from the entry-level Sport and passing from Longitude arrive at the most complete Limited, from which you can go to the specialist and complete Trailhawk or choose to amplify finishes and equipment for a more citizen use with the version Limited S.

Performance Test

For our test, we chose to test the 1.3 to 150 hp petrol on a renegade Jeep Limited on the road and to test the 2.0-liter Diesel from 170 hp on the TORTUOS offroad routes present at the Centro Sperimentale di Balocco. So let’s go with order. Once boarded the Limited (in blue in the comparative photo) The car communicates an unexpected solidity.

The driving position offers excellent visibility also thanks to the virtually vertical windshield that recalls the most specialized models of the brand. Really good therefore the ergonomics, designed to offer a good onboard comfort even to pretty cheerful. What we enjoyed right away is a great confidence that insists the car. Perhaps due to a communicative steering or a little “dancer” trim, the fact remains that the new renegade is allowed to lead with precision and rigor decidedly above the average for the segment of belonging.

The gearbox, which in the case of the 150 Hp is a double dry clutch with 6 ratios, is quite vigorous in pressing the drive torque to the front wheels. In fact, in the Jeep, they worked to guarantee a very different thrust from the almost electrical response of the Nipponese CVT or of the torque Converter unit mounted-for example-on the 180 Hp version.

Truly complete-as they want marketing and security-also the electronic endowment that also makes use of active driving aids such as the Forward Collision Warning-Plus with active Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.

Moving on to the Trailhawk instead, the offroad path has highlighted a rather unexpected driving dynamics. In 2015 we drove the previous series, better than we could expect, but this time in the Jeep has taken a step further. Starting from the tint that, if before was a pastel orange, now seems dedicated to Tarantino’s Kill Bill with the bright yellow of the bodywork combined with a matte black for some finishes. The interiors are in red finishes for the inserts and the Trailhawk on well-finished leather seats.

The route has highlighted an extremely reliable suspension unit, as well as the all-wheel drive set in 4WD low and Lock mode, to maximize the thrust at low speeds. Fords, climb to 57% of slope and paths of rough and primitive cobblestones were addressed without any uncertainty. The real strength, however, is the ease with which they manage the typical maneuvers of the Jeep, even facing obstacles at a speed far superior to situations of real life where the path is usually not known. The physiological limit of the renegade Trailhawk is to be sought in the trim, which in addition to facing the offroad must be able to lead us with the same tranquility even in the journeys from home to work. The Trailhawk, at the end of the day, is a dual purpose.

Our Verdict

The New Jeep Renegade offers, depending on the use destinations, a myriad of opportunities. From the solid city, vehicle can, in fact, become a valuable ally for the off-road. Maybe not specialistic, but certainly well above the real needs of those who buy it. Jeep Renegade 2020 is available from July 2018 in Italy and at the end of the year in the rest of the European markets. The launch price, in line with the previous version, was set at €22,000.
