We drove the 2019 Dacia Duster to discover the merits, defects, and peculiarities of this second series. Here are our impressions on the 1.5 dCi 110hp with all-wheel drive and lots of electronics available.
Dacia Duster, since the launch of the first series in 2010 in full economic crisis, has been able to offer a solid and concrete alternative to the cars that dominated the market at the time, relaunching a brand born under the wing Renault and founded more than half a century ago.
Sometimes the technology needed to make a product accessible to the masses requires more attention than that used for luxury goods. Think of the pen: how much is a plunger fountain pen compared to a Bic and which one is more functional? Yet the latter was invented sixty years later.
The 2019 Dacia Duster is a mature and successful second series, both for the exteriors and for what concerns the endowment. The dusting machine, so the name should be translated, is inspired by the homonymous car presented in England in the early eighties by Dacia. Let’s start by saying that all the news, the devices and the technical minorities introduced with the new generation have left the attack price unchanged, equal to € 11,900.
The front of the 2019 Dacia Duster is characterized by LED daytime headlamps that slightly hint at the sister Renault and a stylistically more sophisticated grid protected by a revised fender.
At the rear, the changes become more concrete, especially with regard to the light clusters and the lines that determine the tailgate, which makes room for 478 liters of cargo (1623 liters once the seats have been knocked down).
After all, however, one can not speak of a real transformation: Duster holds tight to the pragmatic and concrete character that made it famous, changing only when one enters.
Infotainment has been revised and is now easier to manage, thanks to the quick piano keys placed between the screen and the climate controls.
The latter is (finally) automatic, a nice treat considering the car segment. Instead, the additions with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are missing on all the outfits that – to be precise – have been christened Access, Essential, Comfort, and Prestige.
2019 Dacia Duster Engine Specs
The stars arrive, when all right, at the party, started: for this reason, the MVP of the Duster engine range, the 1.6 LPG, is scheduled for the end of 2018 or even for the first months of 2019. In the meantime the engine range, always up-to-date and Made in Renault, it includes the 115hp petrol SCe with a five-speed gearbox and two diesel units, the first 90hp with the manual gearbox and the second, 110hp, with the possibility to choose the automatic EDC.
In this case, however, it will be necessary to renounce the four-wheel drive, made available in all engine variants. We have chosen to drive the 1.5-liter dCi (diesel oil) with 110 Hp and 4 × 4. This is because, in our view, it is the configuration that makes more justice to the machine.
But do not think to pay it dearly: equipped with Essential equipment, our Dacia Duster would cost € 16,550. To know in detail all the available equipment and compare prices, we refer to our official price list.
If outside the car remains almost unchanged, once boarded and turned on the engine we begin to find the first substantial differences. The 2019 Dacia Duster offers a high and dominant seat, just as you can expect from an SUV, but without worrying with exaggerated encumbrances: the 4,341 meters in length do not affect the agility, as well as the width of 1.8 meters, does not preclude roads of the countryside or city lanes. The height of 1,693 meters leaves 21 centimeters free from the ground to try out off-road.
Which does not mean, however, that Duster stops on stony roads, on the contrary: with a bit of skill and the right muddy and related dirt tires are a minor thing. We close the examination of the volumes with the 445 liters of luggage always available that guarantee a load threshold among the widest in the category.
Therefore, ergonomics is confirmed as excellent, even better. The new location of infotainment in fact makes the display easier to read and achieve, even if the steering wheel design keeps its look slightly anachronistic. But Dacia Duster is so, rustic as a trattoria and as tasty as traditional dishes. And, after all, without real renunciations , it puts a lot of substance into play.
The Renault engine , which at low revs should remember a tractor, behaves instead with great delicacy. Merit of the French technicians, who gave life to a rather silent engine, as well as those of Romania, which with this model year 2018 they have improved the padding.
On the technical side, the new Duster takes a step forward by introducing the electric power steering, which can be appreciated especially in the mix where the precision increases significantly: not that before there was, simply the mechanical units are less punctual in the reactions. For the rest of the car does not miss anything, not even the speed controller and a connection via Bluetooth to connect the smartphone.
In terms of driving, the engine proves to be concrete, never too brilliant in sthe hooting, but always ready both in the steepest climbs and in the city departures . The trim responds faithfully to the canons of the segment, therefore proves to be relatively soft when we face the fast mix, but is reliable every time we drive within the limits of the CdS
Really interesting the operation of ‘ Hill Descent Control, ma odule available on all 2019 Dacia Duster with 4×4: it is enough the madman before a steep descent and the car will handle the situation, leaving us the freedom to accelerate and brake with a maximum speed of 13Km / h. Difficult to ask for more, also because in the dirt ascents (in reverse, to test the limits of traction) the car does not get caught by surprise.
We close with a happy parenthesis on consumption, which in this 1.5 liters Diesel are around 16Km traveled with one liter of diesel: extremely satisfactory numbers if we think of the segment of origin – that of Crossover- and the fact that the car offers the four-wheel drive.
2019 Dacia Duster Verdict
Probably the question that runs in the head of those looking for a road test of the Duster is one: to me that I understand very little this seems perfect, but why it costs so little? Is there a rip-off? The answer, by now you’ve already guessed it, is no. No rip off. Renunciation in comfort probably, but little else.
Because aesthetics leave nothing to chance and the guide convinces immediately. Moreover, the resale of a Dacia Duster is always guaranteed. The service network is Renault , therefore capillary, and maintenance is always cheap.
